Modifications/Restoration:

The early history of the car is unknown, apart from the owners. It must have had a "hard" life though, as there was evidence of panel repair and repainting when purchased in 1972. It also had engine number 16MNHY5911 fitted. According to the BMC engine code web site this engine was a 1622cc high compression unit from a column change Farina-bodied Morris. It had been overbored to about 1750cc so went very well. When being prepared for racing in 1974 we noticed a number of colours under the yukon yellow!

To race the car was fitted with an MGB motor substantially modified, with a Weber and extractors. It had a roll bar and wide flares over 7" Holden HG steel rims with splined centres. It ran RA100’s (ex Allan Moffat’s testing tyres!) It was later fitted with Gordon Dobie spun steel lightweight rims on alloy centres. It had no windscreen except a small red wind deflector.

To compete at the AGP Meeting in 1978 the car was returned to a "standard" appearance, being repainted a lighter carnation red with no stripes and black wire wheels.

History of Car:

The car was the 67th 1600 built and was assembled in Australia. It was first registered on 4th December 1959. In 1967 the car was sold to someone in WA but strangely the car remained in Victoria in Laburnum and later in Doncaster. On 23rd October 1968 Brent Motors at 88 Holmes Street in Brunswick bought the car then sold it, bought it back and sold it again in quick succession. No dates are available for these transfers but on 24th April 1970 the car was back at Brents again. It was sold several times before it was purchased by the current owner from Cambridge Motors at 857 Nepean Highway Moorabbin on 10th October 1972.

When purchased in 1972 the car was a Ford colour – Yukon Yellow (see photo) with black trim. It competed in this colour in club events for 2 years, winning the MGA Championship.

In 1974 the registration was changed to MG-081 but this was never used as the car was taken off the road and prepared by Paul Trevethan for racing as a Production Sports Car (Group D) and painted Carnation Red with a wide orange stripe down the middle of the car.  It raced for a number of years, was retired then emerged again as an Historic Group L(a) car.  It last raced in 1978 at the Phillip Island 50th Anniversary of the Australian Grand Prix Meeting.

After 25 years "in the shed" the car is currently being restored for MG Racing and selected speed events.
