History of Car:

This was one of a batch of 12 CKD kits that started production in the KD Department on 31 January 1961; they were despatched to Australia from the UK on 3 February 1961.

Due to a combination of a 2-3 month sea voyage and the fact that MGA MK1 sales had slowed, meant that it was not assembled by the Pressed Metal Corporation (on behalf of BMC) until sometime between late January / early February 1962 (a full year since leaving the UK).

It’s build number of 1428 indicates a late Australian 1600 as the last MK1 build number is 1463. There are very few EXACT build dates for Australian MGA’s, however the above was deduced based on the following: Australian build number 1400 was built on 18 January 1962, whilst build number 1461 was built on 21 February 1962.

The car was sold by Lanes Motors and first registered 9 February 1962 to an unknown owner in Elsternwick; second unknown owner from South Yarra; third owner Philip Dunstan of Mt Waverly; fourth owner from approximately 18 Dec 2003 Steven Hawkins of Bungendore (NSW). Steve didn’t make the trip home from Victoria and still has what was the cars second engine block (16GAU1633 – cracked…) wrapped in plastic.
